The Moon in December 2026
December begins with a diminishing moon. December 1st at 7:08 pm is the last quarter in the Virgin, and until the new moon the moon becomes narrower night after night. These first days belong to cleaning up and closing: what has remained in the year can now be completed before the holidays begin.
On Barbara's Day, 4 December, cherry or forsythia branches are cut according to the old custom so that they bloom on Christmas. In 2026 the moon stands on this day in Libra, on a flower day. The new moon follows on 9 December at 01:51 in Sagittarius. From then on the moon increases and wanders through Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries and Taurus.
In this time the winter solstice falls: On 21 December at 21:50 the sun reaches Capricorn. It is the longest night of the year, from now on the days become longer again. The full moon falls on Christmas Eve: In the early morning hours of 24 December, at 02:28 clock, it stands in cancer, the sign of home, origin and security.
After the feast the moon takes off again and passes through the lion and the virgin. The last quarter stands on December 30 at 19:59 in the Libra, and there the moon stays also over the turn of the year until it changes to the Scorpio on New Year's Day at 11:15.
